Japan Trip: Night 3 – Roppongi Hills

After our wonderful Modern Kaiseki meal at Ryugin, we wandered around the nearby Roppongi Hills area:

Definitely some wonderful architecture, but probably a bit too complex and confusing for its own good. We then proceeded up to do the touristy thing and see the Tokyo City View in the Mori Building:

After failing to capture Tokyo Tower properly (my camera skills failed me :P), we proceeded back to Shinjuku. Who knew that the next day would be even more amazing?

Japan Trip Day 6 – Fashion-crazy Shibuya!

On our last day in Tokyo, after a great uber Ramen lunch, we headed off to see the much-talked about center of energy known as Shibuya... on a Saturday.

We had heard it could be a madhouse, especially on the weekends, and just like our previous days' experiences, nothing could've prepared us for the shock and crash of High Style with Street Style (and everything inbetween) as we stepped out of Shibuya station! Wow!

And I look up and see Ayu-chan greeting me (^_~):

It was literally a sea of people!

Looks like another season of Gokusen(!) got approved:

Japan Trip: Day 5.5 – Nakano Broadway

So after the amazing glory that was Lunch at Menya Kissou, we headed off to properly appreciate Nakano and the packed mall that is Nakano Broadway (our friend had showed us a bit of it a few days earlier, but we were literally on a speed tour, just speed-walking through the entire area and leaving :).

Here's some shots of Nakano Sun Road / Nakano Broadway, just outside Nakano station:

Nakano Sun Road / Nakano Broadway is one gigantic mini-mall, with lots of quirky, interesting Japanese shops, eateries, and home of Mandarake, a big Anime and Manga-focused shop. Some pics of the inside shopping area:

It's just plain scary how much merchandise there is just for the Japanese world of Anime and Manga!

Afterwards, we had the most amazing Tonkatsu I've ever had in my life (not even close!), and then spent the rest of the evening back in Shinjuku. Here's a few more pics at night:

Sorry for the blurry pic (it was on the fly as the light was changing ;) - Here we have a fly-by-night Ramen Stand! In L.A., we have Taco Trucks that will drive and stop at some location at night and sell cheap (and usually) tasty Tacos. In Japan, they have cool, mobile Ramen stands that set up at night! Lucky! I wanted to try it but we were so full from dinner earlier...

This was some cool Izakaya / Pub with a wacky / cool Mascot! (^_^) Just had to take the picture. I didn't get a chance to try it. Maybe next time...

2008 Japan Trip Finale – Farewell Kyoto, Sayonara Japan!

So after the simple, but tasty lunch at Chiifu, we got back to our hotel in time for our transportation to Kansai Airport. It was hard to believe, but our Japan Trip was finally coming to an end, ::sniff:: (;_;). Some more uniquely Japanese signage on the way to the airport:

I had no idea that Kansai Airport was on the ocean!

Kansai Airport itself was SO new and modern! It was spacious, relaxing and really nice.

After a 12 hour flight or so, we arrived safely back in L.A., and my Spring Japan Trip 2008 came to an end. I would say that this vacation to Japan during Sakura season was the greatest vacation I've had in my life, from a cultural, entertainment and excitement standpoint, as well as a culinary standpoint. I've never had so many good meals in a row, in my life, regardless of whether it was Michelin 3 Star or just a simple Ramen shop, or a Takoyaki stand. This trip literally revolutionized my perceptions of what "Japanese food" is all about, and it isn't because of the "newness" of Japan, nor any "rose-colored glasses." (^_~) From the amazing Ramen, super-fresh Sushi, to the Modern and Traditional Kaiseki meals, to the Takoyaki and Soba and Yuba I had, to the stylish Izakaya and mouth-watering Tonkatsu, every single type of Japanese food I tried in Japan blew away "the best" I had ever had previously in America; there is no comparison.

Going forward, I'm glad to have found Urasawa in L.A. to help bring a taste of Nihon back to L.A., but for all those other types of cuisine, I can only hope that either some restaurants open up soon in L.A. that pursues the excellence I had experienced in Japan, and/or I'm able to get away and take another Japan vacation soon. (^_~)

Finally, reflecting back on the trip, I would say being able to see the Sakura Cherry Blossom Trees in full bloom in Tokyo and in Kyoto at the right time (a mini-miracle of timing), was the highlight, along with the Studio Ghibli Museum, and... just every day, hour and minute I was in Japan. Yah... it was all one big highlight. (^_^)v

Japan Trip Day 7: On to Kyoto!

So on the 7th day of our Japan Trip, it was the last morning in Tokyo and we started our exciting journey to the old imperial city of Kyoto. Here are some early morning shots of Tokyo as we leave by bus to the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) Station.

The famous Bullet Train was *so* spacious and comfortable! You could recline your seat all the way back and get a nice horizontal sleep. :)

We finally arrive in Kyoto!

Kyoto is definitely a completely different city and different way of life than Tokyo. We immediately felt the laid-back, relaxing, slower life style from the moment we stepped off the Shinkansen. These are shots of one of the biggest main streets in Kyoto. As you can see it's much more old-fashioned, lower horizons, and just different from Tokyo in every way possible:

Japan Trip: Day 4 – Akihabara!

I had heard all the statements from people saying that "Akiba" (short for Akihabara) was the ultimate place to get electronics and/or find things based on Anime, Manga or Games. Even with that preparation, getting off the train at Akihabara Station was a wacky and bizarre experience.

And then inside the wacky buildings, nearly every single floor is also packed with individual Anime, Manga, Toy, and Game shops! Wow...

Japan Trip Day 7: Kyoto’s Beautiful Sakura in Maruyama Park!

So after the wonderful Yuba lunch we had, we were off to see the fully blooming Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) in Kyoto! We were truly blessed, after having arrived in Tokyo earlier just in time for the full-bloom of the Sakura, when we arrived in Kyoto it was also full-bloom and all the locals were out this day! We headed off to Maruyama Koen (Park), a popular Hanami spot. There were so many people heading over to Maruyama Koen that we got out of our taxi 3 blocks away and walked (because it was faster).
